JAMB Art has four sections: Section A (Classification, Elements and Principles of Art), Section B (Historical Dimensions of Art), Section C (Artistic Skills, Techniques and Tools), and Section D (Art Appreciation, Functions and Entrepreneurship). Section B — especially Traditional Nigerian Art and Contemporary Nigerian Artists — carries the most weight.
JAMB sets 60 questions in Art. The questions are drawn from all four sections of the syllabus. History of art, traditional Nigerian art cultures (Nok, Ife, Benin, Igbo-Ukwu) and art movements (Impressionism, Cubism, etc.) are among the most frequently tested areas.
You must know the key traditional Nigerian art cultures: Nok, Igbo-Ukwu, Ife, Benin, Esie, Igala, Jukun, Akwanshi and Mbari. For each, understand the origin, location, style and characteristics of the artworks. JAMB tests these consistently every year.
The 19th and 20th century art movements in Section B are high-yield: Impressionism, Realism, Futurism, Cubism, Bauhaus, Pop Art, Abstract Expressionism and Fauvism. You should know the defining characteristics and key artists associated with each movement, as well as the Renaissance artists — Giotto, Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci and Raphael.
Yes. Section A tests art terminology (pigments, chiaroscuro, cire-perdue, armature, terracotta, etc.) and the elements and principles of design. These are straightforward marks — learn each term and its definition, and be able to identify the elements (line, colour, form, texture, tone) and principles (balance, rhythm, proportion, harmony, contrast) in artworks.
The four-section structure of the Art syllabus has remained stable. Computer Graphics (CorelDraw) and Art Entrepreneurship remain part of Section C and D respectively. Always practise past questions from 2023 onwards to stay current with JAMB's question style.
