NECO vs WAEC 2026
Which is harder? Which do universities prefer? Should you sit both? All the honest answers Nigerian students need before choosing.
💡
Quick Answer
Both WAEC and NECO are accepted equally by JAMB and virtually all Nigerian universities. Neither is officially "better" than the other for admission purposes. The difference is when they are held, what the exams look like, and how difficult students find them in practice.
NECO vs WAEC — Side by Side 📊
Key Differences That Actually Matter 🎯
📅
Timing — NECO Comes After WAEC
WAEC exams typically run from April to June while NECO runs from June to August. This means NECO results come out later in the year. If you are applying for admission in the same year, WAEC results arrive first and give you more time to process applications before Post-UTME deadlines.
📝
Question Style — Slightly Different
WAEC questions are generally considered more application-based and analytical. NECO questions are seen by many students as slightly more straightforward and direct. However, both follow the same national curriculum, so topic coverage is essentially the same. Students who practise both WAEC and NECO past questions have the broadest preparation.
🏫
Admission — Both Are Equal
JAMB, all federal universities, state universities, polytechnics and colleges of education accept both WAEC and NECO results equally. No Nigerian institution officially prefers one over the other. A C6 in Chemistry from WAEC counts exactly the same as a C6 in Chemistry from NECO.
🌍
International Recognition — WAEC Wins
If you plan to study abroad — UK, USA, Canada, Ghana, South Africa — WAEC results are far more widely recognised than NECO. NECO is a Nigeria-only examination and most foreign institutions are unfamiliar with it. For international applications, WAEC is the clear choice.
Should You Sit Both WAEC and NECO? 🤔
Yes — sitting both is a smart strategy for many Nigerian students, and here is why.
✓
You can combine results across two sittings
JAMB allows candidates to combine O'Level results from a maximum of two sittings. If you sat WAEC in 2024 and NECO in 2025, you can combine the best credits from both to meet admission requirements — for example, using your WAEC English credit and your NECO Mathematics credit together.
✓
It gives you a second chance on subjects you failed
If you got a D7 in Physics at WAEC, sitting NECO the same or following year and getting a C4 means you now have a Physics credit — without waiting a full year to resit WAEC.
✓
More chances = more options
Having results from both exams gives you more flexibility when applying to universities, especially for courses with specific subject requirements. Some professional bodies also specify which combination of O'Level and exam body they prefer.
Important: JAMB counts a maximum of two sittings. Sitting WAEC and NECO counts as two separate sittings even if they were in the same calendar year.

Practice WAEC Questions →Common Questions 🤔
Students' experiences vary. Many find NECO questions more direct and straightforward compared to WAEC, which tends to be more analytical. However, difficulty depends heavily on the specific year and the subjects you are sitting. The best approach is to practise past questions from both exams for every subject.
For Nigerian university admission, both are equally accepted. For international recognition or foreign university applications, WAEC is far more widely recognised. If you might study abroad, prioritise WAEC.
Yes. JAMB accepts NECO results the same way it accepts WAEC results. You can use NECO O'Level credits to meet JAMB's O'Level entry requirements.
Both are valid options. If you failed specific subjects in WAEC, sitting NECO soon after gives you a faster second chance. You can combine the credits from both results for admission purposes. Alternatively, waiting for the next WAEC May/June is also fine — just use the time to practise past questions seriously.
JAMB allows a maximum of two O'Level sittings to be combined for admission. This means you can combine results from any two examinations — WAEC 2024 + NECO 2025, or WAEC 2024 + WAEC 2025, for example. A third sitting cannot be added.
