How to Check Your WAEC Result
Step-by-step guide to checking your WAEC SSCE result online — what you need, what each status means, and what to do if something goes wrong.
What You Need Before You Start 📋
🪪
Your WAEC Examination Number
7-digit candidate number printed on your WAEC slip or exam timetable.
📅
Your Exam Year
The year you sat for the exam — e.g. 2024 or 2025.
🔐
A Scratch Card PIN
The WAEC result checker scratch card. Available at authorised WAEC offices, banks, and some cybercafes. One card = one result check.
🌐
Internet Access
You need a working internet connection to access the WAEC results portal at waecdirect.org.
Note: Each scratch card has a limited number of uses. Scratch carefully to avoid damaging the PIN. If you damage the card, you will need to buy a new one.
How to Check Your Result — Step by Step 🪜
1
Go to the WAEC Result Checker Website
Open your browser and go to waecdirect.org. This is the only official WAEC result checking portal. Avoid any other websites claiming to check WAEC results — they are scams or phishing sites trying to steal your details.
2
Select "Check WAEC Result"
On the homepage, click on the "Check WAEC Result" or "SSCE Result" button. Make sure you are selecting the right exam type — either May/June (for school candidates) or November/December (for GCE/private candidates).
3
Enter Your Exam Number and Year
Type in your 7-digit WAEC examination number exactly as it appears on your exam slip. Then select the exam year from the dropdown. Double-check both — an incorrect exam number will show someone else's result or an error.
4
Enter Your Scratch Card Details
Enter the serial number and PIN from your WAEC scratch card. The serial number is usually printed on the card. The PIN is under the scratch-off panel. Enter both carefully — they are case-sensitive.
5
Submit and View Your Result
Click the submit button. If all details are correct, your result will load showing your grades for each subject. Take a screenshot or print the page for your records.
What Your Result Status Means 📊
✅
Result Released
Your result is available and shows your grades for all subjects. This is what you want to see. Check all grades carefully and compare them with your expected performance.
⏳
Result Pending / Not Yet Released
WAEC has not yet released results for your sitting. This is common in the weeks after the exam. Check back regularly — WAEC usually releases results 3 to 8 weeks after the last paper.
🔒
Result Withheld
Your result has been withheld by WAEC. This usually happens due to suspected examination malpractice, outstanding fees, or administrative issues at your school. Contact your school principal or visit the nearest WAEC office with your exam slip and identification to find out the specific reason.
🚫
Result Cancelled
WAEC has cancelled your result or a specific subject. This is typically due to confirmed examination malpractice. A cancelled result means the affected subject(s) will not appear as valid on your certificate. You will need to resit the cancelled subject(s).
Common Problems & What to Do 🛠️
Wrong name or date of birth on my result
This is a data entry error from your school's registration. Visit your school immediately — the principal needs to write a letter to WAEC on school letterhead requesting a correction. Bring your original admission letter, birth certificate and exam slip as evidence.
My exam number is not found
Double-check you are entering the correct 7-digit number and the right exam year. If the number is definitely correct, contact your school — there may have been a registration issue. Your school can verify with WAEC directly.
My scratch card PIN is not working
Make sure you entered the PIN exactly as shown — no spaces, correct capitalisation. If the card has been used before, it will not work again. Check if the silver panel was already scratched before you bought it — this is a sign the card may have been tampered with. Buy a new card from an authorised source.
One of my subjects is missing from my result
If a subject you sat for is not showing on your result, it may have been withheld pending investigation, or there could be a registration error. Contact WAEC directly or through your school with your exam slip showing you registered for that subject.
My result shows a different grade than I expected
WAEC marking is final after the standard marking process. However, you can apply for a result re-check (remarking) through WAEC if you believe there was a marking error. This involves a fee and is done through your school or directly at a WAEC office.
WAEC SSCE vs WAEC GCE — What's the Difference? 🎓
📅
WAEC SSCE (May/June)
Written by school candidates — students currently enrolled in secondary school. This is the standard WAEC exam most students sit in their final year of secondary school. Results are released around August–September of the same year.
🎒
WAEC GCE (Nov/Dec)
Written by private candidates — graduates resitting to improve grades, or those who missed the May/June sitting. The GCE is conducted between October and December and results are released the following year around February–March.
✅
Are Both Accepted?
Yes — both WAEC SSCE and WAEC GCE results are equally accepted for university admission, NYSC, and employment. The certificate carries the same weight regardless of which sitting you used.
📋
Checking the Right Result
When checking your result on waecdirect.org, make sure you select the correct exam type — May/June or November/December. Selecting the wrong type will show no record or someone else's record.
Verifying Your Result for University Admission 🏫
Many universities, employers, and government agencies require that your WAEC result be verified through the official WAEC online verification service before they accept it. This is separate from checking your own result.
What is WAEC result verification?
It is an institutional service that allows universities, NYSC, employers and government bodies to confirm that a WAEC result is genuine. It cross-checks your certificate against WAEC's database and returns a confirmation of authenticity.
Where is it done?
Institutional verification is done at waecdirect.org under the "Result Verification" section. Some institutions handle this themselves on your behalf; others ask you to provide a verification PIN or letter.
Do I need to do this myself?
In most cases, the institution requesting verification handles the process directly — you just submit your original certificate or statement of result. However, some universities (especially private ones) ask candidates to bring a WAEC verification printout as part of their Post-UTME or clearance documents.
Cost?
WAEC charges a fee for institutional verification. The fee changes periodically — check waecdirect.org for the current rate. Personal result checking (with a scratch card) is separate from institutional verification.

Practice WAEC Questions →Common Questions 🤔
WAEC typically releases May/June results between 6 to 10 weeks after the last paper. The November/December GCE results usually take slightly longer. WAEC announces the release date on their official website and through the media.
You need a scratch card PIN to access the full result on waecdirect.org. However, your school can sometimes provide access to results for school candidates through the school's WAEC account. Check with your school principal.
Yes — anyone who has your exam number, exam year and a valid scratch card PIN can check your result. This is why you should keep your scratch card details private.
Each WAEC scratch card can only be used a limited number of times — usually once or twice depending on the card type. After the uses are exhausted, you need to purchase a new card.
You can retake WAEC as a private candidate in the next available sitting — either May/June or November/December. Many students retake specific subjects they failed without repeating all subjects. Focus your preparation on past questions for the subjects you need to improve.
Yes — a printed statement of result from waecdirect.org is widely accepted by NYSC, employers and government agencies. Keep the printout neat and unaltered. Some employers may additionally request institutional verification — your original certificate should be collected from your school when it becomes available.
waecdirect.org can experience high traffic especially just after results are released. If the site is unavailable, wait a few hours and try again — usually from early morning or late at night when traffic is lighter. Avoid using unofficial third-party sites that claim to check WAEC results; they are not trustworthy and some are outright scams.
You will not know in advance — you only find out when you attempt to check and the portal shows a "withheld" status instead of displaying your grades. If this happens, do not panic; contact your school principal immediately as withheld results are often resolvable, especially if they were held due to school fee issues rather than malpractice.
