Common Questions 🤔

JAMB Commerce covers 16 topics: Commerce itself, Occupation, Production, Trade (home and foreign), Purchase and Sale of Goods, Aids to Trade (advertising, banking, insurance, transport, warehousing), Business Units, Financing Business, Trade Associations, Money, Stock Exchange, Business Management, Marketing, Legal Aspects, Commodity Exchange, and Business Environment and Social Responsibility.
JAMB sets 40 questions in Commerce. Questions are drawn from across all 16 topics, with consistent emphasis on Trade, Aids to Trade (especially banking and insurance), Business Units, and Financing Business.
Trade (Topic 4) and Aids to Trade (Topic 6) together carry the highest number of questions year after year. Within these, insurance principles, channels of distribution, foreign trade documents, and types of bank are especially frequent. Business Units and Financing Business are also high-yield topics.
JAMB tests six core principles of insurance: indemnity (you cannot profit from a claim), insurable interest (you must have a financial stake in what is insured), subrogation (the insurer takes over rights after paying a claim), contribution (sharing a claim among multiple insurers), utmost good faith (full disclosure of all material facts), and proximate cause (the immediate cause of the loss).
JAMB tests several types of capital including authorised (registered) capital, issued capital, called-up capital, paid-up capital, working capital, liquid capital and owners' equity. You are expected to be able to calculate these from given figures, so practise numerical questions on capital computation.
The Commerce syllabus has been largely stable. The inclusion of e-commerce, e-banking and e-marketing reflects JAMB's ongoing update to digital commercial activities. Commodity Exchange (Topic 15) and Business Environment/Social Responsibility (Topic 16) are newer additions that candidates sometimes overlook. Practice past questions from 2023 onwards to stay current.
